Full moon of September, and corn bread.

September, no longer summer but not quite Autumn is a mixture of both.  Hot sunny days and frosty nights, strong thunder storms and rainbows,  a dash of snow and beautiful sunsets.  That is September in the the piney wood.  It is also the time when you see sweet corn stands along the road and heaps of it at Farmers markets.  Silver queen is my favorite variety, an oldie but a goodie.

Are you feeling hungry? The full Corn Moon rises on the evening of September 7, 2025. Why do we call it the Corn Moon? Learn facts about this beautiful late summer Moon, as well as the best time to view it.

When to See the Full Moon in September 2025

This year, September’s full Corn Moon will peak illumination at 2:09 P.M. Eastern Time on Sunday, September 7. It will be below the horizon at this time, so be sure to watch for it after sunset.

Why Do We Call it the Corn Moon?

This time of year—late summer into early fall—corresponds with the time of harvesting corn in much of the northern United States. For this reason, a number of Native American peoples traditionally used some variation of the name “Corn Moon” to refer to the Moon of either August or September. Examples include Corn Maker Moon (Western Abenaki) and Corn Harvest Moon (Dakota).

Alternative September Moon Names

Other Moon names for this month highlight how September is the transitional period between summer and fall:

  • Autumn Moon (Cree)
  • Falling Leaves Moon (Ojibwe)
  • Leaves Turning Moon (Anishinaabe)
  • Moon of Brown Leaves (Lakota)
  • Yellow Leaf Moon (Assiniboine)

The behavior of animals is also a common theme, with Child Moon (Tlingit) referring to the time when young animals are weaned, and Mating Moon and Rutting Moon (both Cree) describing the time of year when certain animals, like moose, elk, and deer, are looking to mate.

Moon Facts & Folklore

  • Usually, the Moon rises about 50 minutes later each day; but around the time of the autumnal equinox, it rises only around 30 minutes later in the United States—even less in Canada.
  • Frost occurring in the dark of the moon kills fruit buds and blossoms, but frost in the light of the moon will not.

Cornbread Recipe

Jennifer Debth

This is the BEST Cornbread Recipe! Made with cornmeal, creamed corn, and sweet corn – it’s gluten free, perfectly sweet, and PACKED with corn flavor.

The reason I initially wanted to make this cornbread recipe is because I cannot stop making my instant pot chili (which is so good by the way) and it tastes extra delicious with a side of homemade cornbread. It’s fluffy, so moist, a little sweet—but not too sweet—and so good.

I’d been eating the chili “plain” but then decided it just needed a little something extra. And this, my friends, is exactly what I was craving.

Ingredients

This cornbread recipe contains THREE varieties of corn: cornmeal, creamed corn, and sweet corn.

  • Butter – adds moisture and adds an amazing buttery flavor that pairs so well with the sweet corn.
  • Granulated Sugar – adds the perfect amount of sweetness to compliment the corn. Some cornbread recipes call for sugar, while others don’t. It’s the great sugar divide! You can definitely try to omit the sugar if you fall in the latter camp. (*not tested)
  • Eggs – binds everything together.
  • Buttermilk – makes the cornbread ultra moist while also providing a nice tangy flavor.
  • Yellow Cornmeal – the base for our cornbread. Most recipes will call for equal parts cornmeal and flour, but I really wanted to make the corn flavor and texture shine, so we’re just using cornmeal!
  • Cream Style Corn and Sweet Corn – the creamed corn adds moisture and creaminess while the sweet corn adds a nice “pop” in every bite!
  • Baking Soda – helps the cornbread achieve a light and fluffy texture.
  • Salt – enhances other flavors and cuts the sweetness from the sugar and corn.

I highly recommend using store-bought buttermilk, but if you’re in a pinch, make your own! 1 cup buttermilk = 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice + your choice of milk filled to the 1 cup line. Let sit for 10 minutes, then proceed with the recipe.

How to make

This might just be the easiest cornbread recipe ever. Mix (in ONE bowl), bake, then face-plant into your delicious cornbread!

  1. Whisk together butter, sugar, eggs, and buttermilk in a large bowl. bowl of cornbread ingredients
  2. Pour batter into a cast-iron skillet.skillet of cornbread batter
  3. Bake for 40 minutes then serve and enjoy!baked cornbread in skillet being cut

Don’t have a cast iron skillet? Try a greased non-stick baking dish instead: 8×8, 9×9, or even 9×13! *Baking times may vary.*

Is cornbread gluten-free?

This cornbread is gluten free, because it doesn’t contain any flour! Most cornbread recipes DO contain flour, so this recipe is awesome for our gluten-free folks.

Bonus: the lack of flour makes this cornbread moist, dense, and extra corn-y!

How to store

Leftover cornbread will keep in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days, in the refrigerator for 5-7 days or in the freezer for 2-3 months.

To reheat, bake or microwave until warmed through.
