Spring is nowhere in sight. Snow covers the ground and will for a while.
Snowdrops , crocus and daffodils will have to wait, because Spring Snowflake {Leucojum vernum} is the first bloom to grace my tiny flower garden. I feel very blessed to have them.
Some time ago, about 35 years ago, I was out walking along a dirt road, wishing for it to be Spring. I noticed some white flowers growing in the woods. Not far from the yard of a sad, brokedown old house. I thought they were snowdrops! The new owner of the property told me to take whatever I could use. And I thanked her profusely. She later asked me if I was a "Flower Child" and we became friends.
For years I wondeed why these flowers bloomed weeks beore the crocus. Then I found out. It was becasue they aren't Snow Drops!!
So in joyful celebration of that day, Sping Snowflakes and a frienship~~~~~
old house burned down
the woods reclaimed where it stood
Spring Snowflakes still bloom
Spring Snowflake (Leucojum vernum). This lovely flower is similar to a snowdrop but has a fuller, bell-shaped bloom with touches of green on its petals. It typically blooms a couple of weeks before snowdrops, adding a beautiful touch of early spring color to the garden
