This wasn't a planned post. i just learned about Cailleach yesterday. And now I know, or at least think I know where the idea came from. Also as this old Crone also heats her house with wood, I understand perfectly! Keeping the hearth fire roaring in winter is a real chore.
tending the fire often gifts moments of contemplative peace, and a chance to wonder , enjoy solitude, and think fanciful thoughts and ideas. It is still work. I don't have to go out and find my wood supply as Cailleach does.
Living not that far from Punxsutawny, Pa where the famous ground hog Phil makes his prediction each Feb 2nd, i always wondered about where the idea came from. but i don't think I ever wondered enough to ask anyone. Even as a child I thought it was sorta a game or something like that.
