Soup, glorious soup! Soup season is here!
There was always a pot of soup on my Grandma's stove, actuallyof that was true both of my Grandma's stoves. Into it went all leftovers, the little portions of canned veggies, the tougher pieces of meat left over from butchering, plenty of dried beans{reconstituted first}, a bit of this and a dash of that from the garden. I am sure neither one had a recipe, but all the same it was good. Soup was always on and it made a welcoming and warming bowl for everyone. MY feeling was and still is that it is the purpose of soup.
Makes the house smell soooo good.
Uses up the leftovers.
Warms the heart, body, and the kitchen. Goes well with homemade bread.
Often brings back good memories.
And if even better than a cup of coffee when shared with a friend.
Making soup is a reward in itself, a tradition that has simmered on stoves everywhere, welcoming, friends, unexpected guests and family alike.
Also an exercise in creativity, the good feeling you get from making something tasty. and using up those bits of of leftovers and extras that might languish in the back of the fridge or freezer, only to go to either waste or the compost bin eventually.
Usually I like to sit down to a bowl of soup that you can east with a fork, a soup that is a meal. But there are times when a delectable broth-like soup can really dress up a sandwich. As the weather gets colder the soup gets thicker and richer.
So for the next few posts, let our conversation, be about, and may-be accompanied by soup.
