Have never had much time for the aptly named 'greeting card Holidays'....or birthdays , unless it meant a day off work. Not suggesting that they shouldn't be celebrated, or even that they are a bad idea , more like this is just a part of my view of the world. I have been known to send a few greetings cards, most of which are homemade using either some of my meager drawings, or a collage made form what ever I had at hand. One of the best was made from the front of a "Mother's Oats" carton, and, a Valentine made from scraps of fabric and band-aids. I 'm not trying to save money, I'm just showing that I care enough to send my"very best", to spend my time, ideas, on a one of a kind card.
If you are thinking that there is also a dash on "use it up, wear it out , make it do or do without", well you caught me.....yes you did.
One of my treasured traditions was that early on Mother's Day exchanging a call with a good friend who always called be before she left for Church on Mother's Day thus for over 3 decades we took turns wishing a Happy Mothers Day to each other. I miss her calls.
I so miss my Mom. Who often planted flowers and vegetables on this day. And who got, and dearly loved the homemade stuff from her kids for her Mother's day. It was an important day, but not one to be over done. I look out my window now and see it snowing huge wet flakes, it's so cold, and it's hard to think of this as the date my Mother chose to start her spring planting. Totally by chance the first vegetable garden at my first home was tilled up on my first Mothers Day. So, yeah, it has become the harbinger of Spring to me also. As surely as seeing a robin looking for morsels in the greening grass. But isn't that the way of motherhood, to keep looking forward, to keep trying to find the things and the paths that make life better.
