Welcome, October!!!!
This morning dawned through a thick white blanket of fog. A fog that one might expect to see rolling along a river valley, not on the top of a mountain. It brought back memories, though, there was a time when I drove to work on a road parallel to a slow moving river, steam fog formed over the river almost ever morning in October. Making the drive at once tedious and beautiful.
October is a transition, a portal, and to me that what our ancestors could have been thinking when they decided that on October final day that the walls or veils between worlds became so thin and the dead and the living could wander freely between worlds, and the unfortunate could get themselves trapped on the wrong side. Even now a quiet late afternoon spent outdoors under the waning sun is particularly good excuse to "wander thru time." So many times I have heard people claim to have "Fall Blues", but to others this time of year crackles with excitement. It also crackles with the aging bones trying to get the yardwork done and the firewood stacked.

Beautiful colors, the last song of Mother Nature, a "fare thee well, and remember me until I return". The agrarian or if you prefer Celtic New Year begins, with the first day of November, and for me this also works, Outdoor work is pretty much done for the year, except for snow shoveling, so one moves indoors, to think and plan and hopefully at least get the old photos organized. There is time for thinking deep thoughts, and rocking in Grandpa' chair while sipping coffee from an oversized mug, while watching the reds and golds of falling leaves.
Perhaps, you, as do I begin to prepare for the long winter nights indoors by spending as much time outdoors as possible. There are apples, nuts and even the occasional mushroom to forage for. And foraging isn't limited only to the fruits of the earth.Books, fabric and yarn, DVDs, there are any number of other things than some might "foraged" , though I make a yearly promise to myself to finish up all that I have leftover from past years before buying more.
Welcome October.
