haiku~~~hickory nuts

For much of my life the very essence of Autumn has always been picking apples and hickory nuts.

first wisps of coal smoke

walking with our empty pails

leaves crunch and blue sky

first one nut, then more

and still more, filling  each pail

 sweet smell of hickory
